The good people of Movable Type decided to change their licensing arrangement a while back. Most notably, the free version was to be limited to 1 author and 3 weblogs. In the past, the only real difference between the paid version and free version was the support (i.e. none for the free version). Predictably, this was not well received by some.
Initially, it looked like log.antiflux.org would either be stuck using version 2.661 forever or paying hundreds of US dollars because we have so many authors and weblogs. Now that things have calmed down a little, Movable Type's licensing has changed again, with the addition of a US$100 unlimited personal use license. It's more than we pay for all the other antiflux.org software combined, but it's still very reasonable and I respect their desire to be paid for all the hard work that goes into making a good product.
We don't need to make any decisions right now, but it's worth keeping an eye on Movable Type developments and checking what other software options are available. Maybe we should start sending donations to the various organizations that produce the free software we use, too.
