as you probably remember from high school

Characters who annoy the hell out of me:

  • kids in class whose only question is "will this be on the exam?"
  • people who use those huge damned beach umbrellas and walk down the middle of the sidewalk, oblivious to the rest of us trying to avoid having our eyes poked out - this goes double for the idiots who don't notice the rain stopped and triple for the short ones who aim the tips of their umbrellas squarely at my face and charge
  • people who use the popular (and scarce) carrels in Koerner to sleep (possible exception when I do it)
  • whoever decides that Plant Operations should use jack hammers and drive big trucks back and forth right outside my classroom

i know i've said this before, but here it is again: for sleeping at ubc, use the math library. there is no single place on campus better suited to taking one-or-two hour naps. the chairs are totally-broken-in-comfy, the air is stuffy and warm, and if you pick up anything to read (ie, a math journal) the sheer force of incomprehension knocks you unconscious.

The math library now has a sign that says something like "this area is for studying, please sleep somewhere else."

I guess you ruined it for everyone.

Tim, don't worry; unless they've hired some new huge librarians there, I think you'll be okay.

Those chairs sure are comfortable.

seriously? they have a sign like that? i guess you'll have to leave "statistics and probability letters" covering your face while you sleep, and if awakened, claim you have bad eyesight, a neck problem and are prone to concentrating very hard.

other optimal sleeping areas at ubc:
join the cube in compsci. they had a posh couch in the office that haslam and i used to nap on.
top floor of cicsr at the centre/southmost area has a little lounge with comfy couches for napping.
top floor of lsk women's washroom also has a nice couch in it for napping.

speaking of couches in women's washrooms... there's one in the washroom on the second floor in the oldest wing of the chem building. but it was always kinda nippy in there since the window was always left open. i'm not sure if it's still there though.

my personal favourite was sleeping at the pool. the warm steamy air, scented with chlorine... i'm getting sleepy just thinking about it. or, if you want a little more comfort, there used to be long, padded chair/couches outside the woodward library.

Yap. I recommend the pool as per erin. Had lotsa naps there.

The only time I clearly remember being at the pool, Michal was quite able to sleep there.

i was always a huge fan of sleeping in the math library. and falling asleep in your desk at the back of a math 120 class, having your head propped up on your hand, your elbow resting on the miniscule little "table" when all of a sudden your elbow slipped off the desk, knocking all of your books to the floor as you simultaneously plunged forward, smacking your head on the desk, waking yourself up. good times.
