google groups with non-google email address

Maybe I missed something, but it seems to be impossible to subscribe to a Google Groups mailing list using a non-Google address. The subscribe page (eg, Capistrano’s) requires you to login with a Google account, and then assumes you want to use Gmail to read the list. I don’t.

The solution is to use Google’s email interface. Send mail to the subscribe address for the list (eg, capistrano-subscribe@googlegroups.com) and then reply to the confirmation email.

I hope this kind of “tight integration” doesn’t get worse.
